Acts 16:16 DBY, And it came to pass as we were going to prayer that a certain female slave, having a spirit of Python, met us, who brought much profit to her masters by prophesying.
NKJV - Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling.
In Acts 16:16, Paul and Silas encountered a young woman who prophesied to them through what Luke calls a “spirit of divination.” However, the Greek word from which “divination” is translated is python. “Python” was a word associated with prophecy amongst the ancient Greeks and Romans. Because it was so well known in the ancient Greco-Roman world, the original readers of Acts would have made an immediate association when they read the words “spirit of python.” Here is how they would have understood it.
The most famous ancient oracle (prophetic center) was at the city of Delphi in Greece and was known as the “Oracle at Delphi.” According to legend, the Greek god, Apollo, had slain a large female serpent--a python--at that site and the spirit of the python had remained. According to the legend, it now possessed the prophets and prophetesses who functioned there, “taking possession of their organs of speech moving and compelling them to give prophetic utterances.”[iii] This was commonly known as the “python spirit” or the “spirit of python.” At the height of its popularity, the prophetic oracle at Delphi maintained three priestesses/prophetesses who offered advice and counsel through the Pythian spirit to a continual stream of visitors including generals and government officials.
Pýthœn is the name of the snake that guards the Delphic oracle, and it is also used from the early imperial period for a ventriloquist, through whom, as many think, a god is supposed to speak, and who is thus regarded as a soothsayer. The Delphic Pythia, like the ventriloquist, speaks in strange sounds. Ventriloquist - one who speaks through another just as in divination, soothsaying, and witchcraft. 1 Sam 28:8 Saul seeks the witch of Endor, 2 Chronicles 33:8 Manasseh sacrifices children while consulting witches and the like, Is. 8:19,20 Rebellious people consult the dead, witches, with whispers and mutterings.
Pythons are of the constrictor type of snake. The python will strangle its food with its coils to kill it before eating it. Pythons are not poisonous and are generally not aggressive unless provoked.
Manner of Activity of python spirits (Characteristics)
Luke uses the “spirit of python” in regards to this slave girl probably because the spirit operating in her was like the one at Delphi. There is, of course, the possibility that she had actually been to Delphi and that is where she picked up this false spirit. It is important to note that what she said was true. Satan and demons have some knowledge and will reveal their “secrets” in order to impress and draw people into their destructive web. Only our God, however, is omniscient, i.e., all-knowing. Here are some of the traits of the spirit of python that are obvious in this narrative.
1. It loves to flatter. The prophecy of this young woman was not given to encourage or affirm, but to flatter. We all need to give and receive affirmation and encouragement, but flattery is sweet talk that is insincere and self-serving. So many today, including leaders, are so starved for affirmation and approval that they are vulnerable to the flatteries of a deceiving, python spirit. Our security is in being so settled in God’s acceptance and approval that we are no longer susceptible to the flatteries of a false prophetic spirit. Beware of those who use prophecy to flatter and, thereby, gain an advantage.
2. It demands attention. This is indicated by the fact that she followed Paul and the others for “many days” continually giving forth her prophecy. Beware of those who use prophecy: the supernatural to thrust themselves into the limelight.
3. It loves to be seen and heard. This is indicated by the fact that she kept putting herself at the center of attention. Make note of those who use prophecy to make themselves the center of attention.
4. It wants to be important and in control. This is indicated by the fact that she directed her prophesying to the leaders of this new movement. Beware of those who use prophecy: supernatural to gain status with pastors and leaders.
5. There is often a monetary motive involved. This young slave girl was raking in a lot of money for her masters. I am afraid this same motive is at work in the charismatic/prophetic movement today, usually in very subtle ways. I read a story about a man, who probably had a genuine gift of prophecy; express his desire to pray for everyone who would bring a $20.00 offering for his ministry to the front. As he prayed and then prophesied over each one, I saw women looking in their purses for money so they could go forward and get a “word.” I believe this man was opening himself to a false spirit—a spirit of python—by his devious actions. I’ve seen many televangelists and prophets in conferences do the same thing. Give a $1,000.00 and get into a special dinner with the prophet of God and get a personal prophetic word just for you!
Method of Attacks of Python
In Acts 16:16 this girl stands in alignment with demons and speaks on behalf of the demonic. Paul said she had a spirit of divination--pneuma puthon which literally means spirit of python. This girl was possessed, indwelt, or inhabited by a controlling spirit of python or divination. From this, we can point out several things in noticing how a python attacks its victim and in this case even a church.
Python kills by constricting not crushing. It ambushes its prey by surprise attack. You never saw it coming. A python wraps itself around its prey and every time the prey exhales it constricts so that the next breath cannot be taken and eventually the prey suffocates and is swallowed. The python spirit constricts your mind, speaking deceit, making light of what is exposed and announced by the servant of God, into your spirit to suffocate the word of God that is laid in your heart. One of the devil's number one attacks is hopelessness, despair, discouragement, and depression; it weighs us down and makes us tired. This spirit will whisper in your ear all kinds of lies, torments, accusations, condemnation, depression, and despair. It makes life heavy with burdens and issues that surround and constrict on all sides until you give up and are swallowed up whole by all the problems created by the python spirit.
You often do not even know you are being attacked. Python attacks in this way, squeezing the life, breath, and joy of the Lord from our lives. It is even difficult to feel the Lord’s presence and you have to continually challenge the people to be hungry for God and that God can use them regardless of what they have been through.
The python spirit creates the Cellophane ceiling. A heaviness that weighs you down until you can’t breathe. It is like a spiritual cap in the spirit realm so God's people can only climb so high in the spirit. It manifests with a sluggish weight during worship and weighs heavy on the countenance of the people in the meeting. Imagine in the natural carrying around a 200-pound snake on your shoulders and how that would weigh you down and make you sluggish.
It also works with the spirit of procrastination, laziness, fear, and stuttering just to name a few. It slowly cuts off needed resources-love, encouragement, finances, hope, faith, joy, etc. The death process is slow, in fact very slow and almost unnoticeable.
Pythons most often get their prey when their prey is not ready, watching, or praying. In the church and in life this experience can often be called a spirit of heaviness. Is. 61:3.
When people lose their dream they get complacent, apathetic, and wander off the path of God. Python spirits attack with words which is the slippery paste vomited by a natural python to enable it to swallow its victim. In Acts 16:16 this girl stands in alignment with demons and speaks on behalf of the demonic. Paul said she had a spirit of divination--pneuma python or spirit of python. Pneuma is breath, wind, or spirit, while divination refers to the art of obtaining secret knowledge, especially of the future, a counterpart of prophecy.
Divination can be understood from the Hebrew qesem used in Ezekiel 21:21-27.

21 "For the king of Babylon stands at the parting of the road, at the fork of the two roads, to use divination: he shakes the arrows, he consults the images, he looks at the liver. 22 "In his right hand is the divination for Jerusalem: to set up battering rams, to call for a slaughter, to lift the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, to heap up a [siege] mound, and to build a wall. 23 "And it will be to them like a false divination in the eyes of those who have sworn oaths with them; but he will bring their iniquity to remembrance, that they may be taken. 24 "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Because you have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your doings your sins appear--because you have come to remembrance, you shall be taken in hand. 25 'Now to you, O profane, wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, whose iniquity [shall] end, 26 'thus says the Lord GOD: "Remove the turban, and take off the crown; Nothing [shall remain] the same. Exalt the humble, and humble the exalted. 27 Overthrown, overthrown, I will make it overthrown! It shall be no longer, Until He comes whose right it is, And I will give it to Him."
Qesem refers to evil omens that were practiced by shaking or flinging down arrows, consulting teraphim, and hepatoscopy (looking at the liver) qesem as if it were one of the arrows to be thrown down. Evil sacrifices and divination at road junctions: to set up battering rams, to call for a slaughter, to lift the voice with negative pronouncements, to set battering rams against the gates-entry, to heap up a siege mound, and to build a wall.
Qesem, divination, manifests also in the casting of arrows - Arrows-fiery darts of the enemy, consultation of images, and parting of the liver.
Python spirits attack by disguising as a prophet - It speaks. When a python constricts its victim, the head of the victim is close to its head as it uses its tongue to hiss over the victim to hear. The Hebrew word nachash means serpent and refers to that what hisses; whisper, a magic spell. Words of others-back biting, lying, division.
Nachash in Hebrew is first mentioned in Genesis 3:1.

1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"
Nachash – serpent, snake (from its hiss), fleeing serpent; to practice divination, divine, observe signs, learn by experience, diligently observe, practice fortunetelling, take as an omen; to hiss, i.e. whisper a (magic) spell; generally, to prognosticate:—× certainly, divine, enchanter, (use) × enchantment, learn by experience, × indeed, diligently observe.
2 Timothy 3:13 NKJV
13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
go'-ace - a wailer, a howler; a juggler, enchanter (because incantations used to be uttered in a kind of howl); a deceiver, imposter; (to wail); properly, a wizard (as muttering spells), i.e. (by implication) an imposter:—seducer.
Nachash and go’-ace both sound very similar spirits. It may be very possible there are prophets and pastors in pulpits that are operating by a python spirit and not the spirit of God.
How Is One Delivered – Discernment
Many churches in the modern charismatic movement would probably have put this young woman on their prophetic team, for what she prophesied was accurate and positive. Discernment is lacking because, in this postmodern world, the lines between true and false are being blurred and even erased. If this had been Paul’s approach he would never have confronted the python spirit and cast it out, for what was being said was true.
Prayerful confrontation-Speak to the spirit and command it to come out from every point of habitation. There are human agents that must be confronted. There are sights and domains of darkness that must be challenged and bound when praying for yourself, your family, ministry, church, or business.
The python spirit is a very destructive and even deadly spirit we just learned will literally squeeze the life out of you. Most people are not familiar with signs that they are under attack by this spirit.
When you learn what some of the signs are of being under spiritual attack by this spirit you can then recognize them and defend yourself from an oncoming attack. If you will learn to develop your spiritual discernment to know when this serpent spirit is planning to attack you can be preemptive in your spiritual warfare by binding the spirit, breaking its assignment against you, and casting it down into chains of darkness.
Signs of python spirit attack:
1. You begin to lose spiritual desire. You just don’t care to continue pursuing spiritual things but continue doing them because it’s what’s expected of you. It’s become a job to you. Work. The blessed man is he who delights in the law of the Lord, not the one who does them because of what he can get for working the Word. Psalm 1 and Psalm 42:1-3. When you are under spiritual attacks you begin to lose the desire and the passion. No desire is a warning sign that you are under spiritual attack.
2. Physical and emotional exhaustion. Daniel 7:25 The enemy said he would wear out the saints…. You get zapped by the enemy and you’ll have no energy. You grow weary and give up. Paul said if you don’t grow weary in well-doing you will reap, but the physical fatigue is too much. Just like Elijah, you’re most vulnerable when you just have had a great victory or you’re about to enter into a great promotion. The enemy will hit you the most after you come out of a great victory. That’s when you have to watch your leisure time and what you allow yourself to be exposed to. Another time you are most vulnerable is just before you are about to enter into a great promotion as he did with Jesus. God just said to Jesus, you are My Son in whom I am well pleased and immediately the devil came to tempt him in the wilderness. Elijah was physically tired and an angel came to him and prepared him a meal. The angel told him to arise and eat. When you are physically and emotionally exhausted is when you are most vulnerable and must be very careful what you are allowing into your spirit and soul but also what you are feeding yourself with. Feed your spirit and soul good food, the Word of God, and not cable television. Make sure you are eating healthy so your body is feeling good and not weary.
3. Lack attack. When spiritual resources begin to dry up on all sides that’s a spiritual attack. Everything starts to break down. This is to get your eyes on money and off of trusting God for your provision. You will become opportunity-oriented instead of trusting God because not every opportunity is from God. Now you made yourself vulnerable to the enemy again and he will strike at the opportune time.
4. Your prayer life is attacked. Matthew 26 Satan said he was going to sift Peter but Jesus asked Peter to pray with Him but Peter couldn’t stay awake. He fell asleep but Jesus didn’t! Our God doesn’t sleep nor does He slumber! Jesus said to Peter pray that you enter not into temptation. Prayer is about helping you not enter into the temptation. 2 Timothy 1:7. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline. Prayer is not a gift it is a discipline. You just do it, but the enemy will attack that prayer every time. The enemy knows if you won’t pray or if you don’t maintain a prayer life you are susceptible to temptation. Peter’s temptation was to rely on his flesh. He didn’t pray as Jesus asked him to. He went to sleep but if he would have prayed he wouldn’t have pulled his knife out and cut a guy’s ear off.
5. Feeling overwhelmed – circumstance is two words ‘circle’ and ‘stand’. To be in a circumstance is to be standing while encircled by issues. You’ll feel like you’re encircled by problems on every side with no way out? That’s what it feels like to be under spiritual attack of a spirit of python, to be overwhelmed, to be surrounded, to be restrained and constricted. You’re tempted to feel like saying what’s the use? There’s no way out, you feel overwhelmed, you feel paralyzed. You feel like the life is being choked out of you because of this spirit of heaviness that is upon you. This is a spirit of python attack and if you don’t recognize it and deal with it this will breed procrastination.
6. Old iniquities begin to resurface – things you got over years ago, but when you are under spiritual attack those old iniquities start to resurface again. Nicotine, drugs, pornography, and things like that. If it was something in your old life and they start to resurface it is a sure sign you are under spiritual attack of a python spirit. When you start wanting them again and you want to go back to them and explain it in your own mind. In other words, you begin to try to rationalize going back in your own mind. Be careful because of what Matthew 12:25 says. When an unclean spirit leaves it comes back with seven more spirits worse than itself and that person’s condition is worse than his first. Don’t be fooled by the enemy. He will always attack from the last place in your life where he was successful. The old iniquities are just a sign that the enemy thinks you’re weak in that area and he will continue to try to hit you there because you’re vulnerable. You know you’re under spiritual attack when you feel yourself going back to those old iniquities. Discouragement is the soul sin grows in.
7. Pulling away from Godly relationships is a sign you’re under spiritual attack. When you try to stay away from church people, saved people, Christian friends, spiritual parents, and you feel more in common with people in the world than you do with people in the church. There’s nothing wrong with being a friend to the sinner or people in the world but there’s something very wrong when you feel more comfortable with them than you do with people of covenant. You used to be on fire. You know what that means right? You were loud wherever I ran into you in public. Praising God and shouting hallelujah but now I see you and you’re hiding behind the mops and brooms in the cleaning supply aisle….cause you know you’re not living right. When you begin to find enjoyment through carnal methods it’s a sign that you’re under spiritual attack. God wants to you have fun, hobbies, entertainment…with your family and friends that are like-minded believers but even with this, you need to be careful not to let it get out of hand because enjoyment through carnal methods can get out of hand. When all of these things begin to take up all your extra time to the point that you begin to miss church to go out of town, or to go to a ball game, or even to go fishing and it begins to weaken your prayer life. You need to be very careful because you are under a spiritual attack and you don’t know it or recognize it. You are now getting your life from these things from out the church and church family but now you’re getting your life from the carnal things you do that consume all your spare time and God’s time and your prayer time. You feel something when you go to the races but you used to feel that something in the church. Then you start to take out the old songs and listen to them. Shake, shake, shake; shake your bootie. It makes you feel something! Takes you back to that time when you were young and in the world. You will begin to look back and if you’re not careful you will begin to desire those old worldly friends. Remember those old friends who were all broke like you? If you’re looking back you better remember Jesus redeemed you and He saved you and brought you out of all that darkness. You better quit looking back on that old lifestyle thinking it was better back then. Jesus is the best thing that EVER happened to me!!!! There’s nothing to go back to!
What does one do when under spiritual attack?
1. Remember that you have been made in the likeness and image of God. What does that mean? It means you’ve been made and conformed to the image of God’s dear Son, Jesus. Jesus outlasted the storm that tried to kill Him and the disciples and you too were made to outlast the storm you are currently going through and any other storm that may come into your life. You were made to outlast any storm or spiritual attack of the enemy. Jesus said two builders built houses. One built his house on sand thinking there would never be a storm. The wise builder built his on a foundation of stone. The storm came and the weak house fell but one of the houses was built to outlast the storm because it was built on the foundation stone, that stone being Jesus Christ. If you’re life and family are built on the rock of Jesus Christ He built you to outlast the storm. It doesn’t matter what the enemy brings in, no python spirit, no witch, no diviner when the enemy comes in like a flood He built you to outlast any storm the enemy will bring your way because when the storm is over, the wind has ceased, and the rain has stopped you will still be standing because He built you to outlast the storm. God knew you’d be going through the storm in your in now and He put a foundation in you that will not break, and will not be moved, and will not be shaken. When under spiritual attack don’t forsake the power of partnership. Eccl. 4:9-10. The bible said if any two of you should agree it shall be done for you. The redwood tree grows up to 300 feet high but its roots only grow to 3 feet down into the ground. Some palm trees' roots grow up to 100 feet down into the ground. That’s why they bend under severe hurricanes but they don’t fall. The reason it can withstand severe weather with very powerful winds is the root system. The redwood grows only 3 feet deep but it also grows up to 100 feet out and intertwines its roots with the roots of nearby redwoods. There’s strength in numbers. The wind is not blowing against one tree isolated by itself it is actually blowing against a forest. There have been some redwoods that have died but are still standing but the roots of the living tree wouldn’t let them fall. That’s how we need to be with those who may seem to be dead because of what they are going through. Don’t forget to stay connected. Stick with those who won’t let you go, with those who refuse to let you fall. We will hold you up until the life of Christ is rising up in and through you again. Don’t forget you were made to outlast the storm!
You will make it through this attack if this message spoke to you. Remember you were made to outlast the storm. Better days will come just don’t grow weary and don’t allow the spirit of python to isolate you. Its only intention is to cut you off from everyone else and then swallow your whole life up and eventually you. You have been given the authority to trample and tread on serpents (pythons) and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy and nothing by any means shall harm you!
Prayer to be delivered from a spirit of python who practiced divination.
First, you must get rid of all materials in your possession associated with divination and occult new age practices. All books, pictures, personal journals of your experiences and assignments, all amulets, talismans, candles, altars, statues, crystals, crystal balls, mirrors, clothing, jewelry, gifts of others who practice the same things, notes, letters, text messages, emails, etc.
Once you have gotten rid of everything from your home you need to make Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of your life. He loves you and will not reject you no matter what you’ve done. If you are already born-again but fell away then rededicate your life to the Lord. His love for you is so great that you couldn’t be so lost that you are beyond saving or bringing back.
Deuteronomy 30:4, If any of your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of the heavens, from there will the LORD your God gather you, and from there will he bring you back:
Jesus, I confess my sin to you. I am guilty. I believe you are the Son of God, that you died on the cross for me, were buried, and raised from the dead, and are now seated at the right hand of God making intercession for me. Lord, wash me with your blood of all unrighteousness and I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit. Come into my heart and come into my life to save me and change me to be like you, Lord. I will serve you all the days of my life, in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

I confess and renounce all the rituals, ceremonies, packs, vows, oaths, and contracts that I entered into with these agents of the devil. I break all ties with the python spirit and all other serpentine spirits that followed behind it to enter me. I renounce all counterfeit spiritual gifts given to me by the spirit of python to prophesy, foretell the future, to mislead others into occult and new age practices, to control others through flattery, to control others by revealing their secrets, to control others through fear, and to rob others of their wealth by false prophetic words. Father, forgive me for every misunderstanding I’ve had with you. Your thoughts towards me are only good and that my soul knows very well. In Jesus’ name, I command the spirit of python to go from me now! I break all ties and covenants with you, in Jesus’ name. I curse you spirit of python and I cast you out of me and my life now in Jesus’ name. Father, thank you for delivering me and setting me free to serve you and you only. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for those under attack by a spirit of python but never practiced divination or new age practices.
First, you must get rid of everything given to you by fortunetellers. Get rid of all statues, figurines, plants, paperweights, dolls, crystals, pouches with herbs and spices in them, handwritten notes, candles, incents to burn, pictures, things given to you to hang in your car, doorways of your home, to place under your bed, to place in your workspace at your place of employment.

I confess reading horoscopes, having my palm read, having tarot cards read, asking psychics for direction, playing with the magic eight ball, or any other way of seeking divine information apart from Your Holy Spirit. I renounce every word I received by palm reading, tarot card reading, scrying and fortunetelling, and any other method of divination. I am truly sorry and ask you to forgive me, Jesus. Wash me and cover me with Your precious blood, Lord, and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I break the hold of the spirit of python and all sub spirits that came with python. I command you to lose me and go from me, in Jesus’ name! I curse the root, the stem, and the fruit of your works in my life. I command it to fall dead to the ground, wither and die, and bear no more fruit, in Jesus' name! I close every door that I opened allowing the spirit of python into my life. Father, I ask you to cleanse me of all unrighteousness by the blood of Jesus Christ. Thank you Jesus for saving me and setting me free. I rededicate my life to you and I ask you to fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I ask you, Father, to baptize me with a fresh impartation of Your holy anointing that sets the captives free. In Jesus' name, I break every mark, every sign, and sigil placed upon your head or body by the devil, demons, witches, warlocks, and diviners. I break them off of you and your life and I break every circle, pyramid, and pentagram drawn around likenesses of you to keep you bound and caged by the spirit of python.
In Jesus' name, I break the bind and break the power of all witchcraft, black magic, sorcery, and divination that has been written, spoken, and recorded over you. I bind the spirit of witchcraft and forbid it to operate against you and your family.
In Jesus' name, I bind every spirit of python and all serpentine spirits that you allowed into your life. I command you to go back through the portals and gateways that were opened to you and I forbid you to ever come back into my brother’s/sister’s life, in Jesus' name.
In Jesus' name, I break all yokes, cords, and chains of the python spirit being used to suffocate you by causing circumstance after circumstance in your life to wear you out and to cause you to give up. I break these things off your mind, will, and emotions. I break them off your lungs and organs and release them to function the way God created them to function.
In Jesus' name, I break every assignment against your prayer life and godly relationships. I bind every spirit sent to keep you occupied and offended so that you don’t pray, making yourself vulnerable to attacks by the python spirit. I cancel it now in Jesus' name.
